Reading Partner Program
Studies show that children who spend time reading with adults tend to read more on their own. Clark County READS works with businesses, community groups, and individuals to recruit and train adult volunteers to share the joy of books with struggling readers in elementary schools. Volunteers typically commit to working one-on-one with struggling readers for an hour each week, for at least ten weeks.
Library Enhancement Program
Donations from groups and individuals allow Clark County READS to replace outdated books in school libraries with new, nonfiction books. Prior to ordering books for a library, we perform an analysis of the library’s collection to determine which books will have the greatest impact on the library and its students.
Reading Is Fundamental Program
In partnership with Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., Clark County READS manages a book distribution program at many schools where students are academically at-risk. This program provides students with the opportunity to choose and keep three new paperback books as their own each year, while also encouraging them to read through festive book-related activities.
Book Re-Use Program
Through book drives at various locations, Clark County READS collects
new and gently-used books for children ages 4-12. Books are sorted and
distributed to teachers in the Clark County School District for use in
their classrooms or to give away to their students. At our book warehouse,
one teacher said, "Free Books— This is Heaven!"
Boots Up For Reading Program
Research has shown that children who read even ten minutes a day outside of school experience substantially higher rates of vocabulary growth between second and fifth grade than children who do little or no reading. Boots Up For Reading is Clark County READS’ book club program aimed at students in the third and fourth grades. Under the guidance of a teacher, students gather before or after school to silently read books and then discuss the books with their peers.
Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new books and advice about the importance of reading aloud into the pediatric exam room. Doctors give new books to children at each well visit from 6 months of age to 5 years, and accompany these books with developmentally appropriate advice to parents about reading aloud with their child.
Ruegy's Readers
The newest program of The Public Education Foundation and Clark County
READS, Ruegy's Readers encourages students to read more, to increase the
utilization of school libraries, and to emphasize the significance of reading
as a lifelong skill. The goal of the program is to donate books to school
libraries, in the names of students selected as Ruegy's Readers. For more
